Evaluating the Seismic Capacity of Dry-Joint Masonry Arch Structures via the Combined Finite-Discrete Element Method

نویسندگان

چکیده

The behaviour of dry-joint masonry arch structures is highly nonlinear and discontinuous since they are composed individual discrete blocks. These vulnerable to seismic excitations. It difficult for traditional methods like the standard finite element method (FEM) simulate failure due their intrinsic limitations. An advanced computational approach, i.e., combined finite-discrete (FDEM), was employed in this study examine first-order capacity arches buttressed with different shapes subjected gravity constant horizontal acceleration. Within framework FDEM, blocks discretised into elements. A formulation implemented each element, providing accurate predictions deformation block contact interactions between Numerical examples presented validated results from existing literature, demonstrating that FDEM capable capturing capacities hinge locations structures. Further simulations on geometric parameters friction coefficient were conducted, influences revealed.

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

An Investigation of the Seismic Interaction of Surface Foundations and Underground Cavities Using Finite Element Method

In this study, the seismic interaction of surface foundations and underground cavities was investigated. For this purpose, a parametric study of geometric dimensions of the foundation and cavity, their location, and the effect of the interaction between surface foundations and underground cavities was evaluated. The variable parameters include the ratio of the overburden height to the foundatio...

Numerical Simulation on Seismic Response of the Filled Joint under High Amplitude Stress Waves Using Finite-Discrete Element Method (FDEM)

This paper numerically investigates the seismic response of the filled joint under high amplitude stress waves using the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM). A thin layer of independent polygonal particles are used to simulate the joint fillings. Each particle is meshed using the Delaunay triangulation scheme and can be crushed when the load exceeds its strength. The propagation of t...

Uncertainty in Seismic Capacity of Masonry Buildings

Seismic assessment of masonry structures is plagued by both inherent randomness and model uncertainty. The former is referred to as aleatory uncertainty, the latter as epistemic uncertainty because it depends on the knowledge level. Pioneering studies on reinforced concrete buildings have revealed a significant influence of modeling parameters on seismic vulnerability. However, confidence in me...
